Biography and legacy

Jared Earl Hazleton was born on September 12, 1937, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Oklahoma in 1959 and a Ph.D. in Economics from Rice University in 1961. His life combined scholarship, teaching, public service, and a lasting commitment to the people and institutions he helped shape.

His academic and professional work included service with the University of Texas, University of Washington, Texas A&M, the University of North Texas, the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, the Texas Research League, and the Southwestern Economics Association. As principal of TexEcon, he continued educating the public through economic analysis and commentary.

His published work addressed the sulphur industry, fisheries economics, macroeconomic policy, development in oil-rich countries, environmental policy, land reform, year-round schooling, bank mergers, and regional economic stability.
