Born on September 12, 1937, in Oklahoma City, Jared was the son of Alfred Larson Hazleton and Myrtle Frances Smith Hazleton. He was the brother of Susan Hazleton Swingen.

Jared earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Oklahoma in 1959 and later earned a Ph.D. in Economics from Rice University. He served as a U.S. Navy officer and began his professional career with the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston.

His academic and public-affairs career included teaching and research at the University of Texas at Austin, leadership at the University of Washington's Graduate School of Public Affairs, the presidency of the Texas Research League, work with Mesa Limited Partnership, and leadership roles at Texas A&M University and the University of North Texas.

Jared's scholarship addressed natural resources, fisheries, environmental policy, land use, development planning, public finance, and economic analysis. He authored and contributed to research that connected economic theory with practical questions affecting governments, businesses, and communities.

He is survived by his wife, Elaine; children Frances, Alan, and Mark; five grandchildren; his sister Susan; and extended family. Family memories preserve the personal history of a husband, father, grandfather, teacher, and friend.

Jared Earl Hazleton was born on September 12, 1937, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, to Alfred Larson Hazleton and Myrtle Hazleton. His sister was Susan Hazleton Swingen. He earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Oklahoma in 1959 and a Ph.D. in Economics from Rice University. At OU he met Elaine, his wife of sixty-six years. They raised Franci, Alan, and Mark, and became grandparents to Weston, Kendall, Marlis, Berit, and Ian.

His work included the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, economics faculty and LBJ School associate dean responsibilities at UT Austin, and a Ford Foundation assignment in Amman, Jordan, from 1973 to 1975. He was dean of the University of Washington’s Graduate School of Public Affairs, president of the Texas Research League, and vice president for economics at Mesa Limited Partnership. At Texas A&M he directed the Center for Business and Economic Analysis and taught finance. He served as UNT’s business dean from 1999 to 2004 before returning to teaching, and continued economic analysis through TexEcon.
